ILEC Legal English Courses

The ILEC course is an extensive course for students of upper intermediate to advanced level who work or plan to work in the international legal community. The material covers a broad selection of areas crucial to using English in a commercial law environment. The course consists of a coursebook and three audio CD’s. Whilst the exam is no longer available, there is a significant amount of material covering a large variety of legal topics including:

Company law: Formation and management, Capitalisation and Fundamental changes

This module commences with an introduction to company law. The syllabus includes the concept of legal English regarding roles in company management, formation of a company, memorandum of association and letter writing. Each component is concluded with a test.

Contracts: Formation, Remedies, Assignment and third-party rights

A very popular area of study which includes formation, negotiation, remedies, assignment and third-party rights.
The material looks at defences to contract formations, covenants, paraphrasing clauses and expressions used in negotiating. There is a section on remedies classes which looks at types of damages, how the court can rule and what actions are taken.
There is also valuable material included which covers correspondence, client interviews and the language used in persuasive writing and speaking; a must for any lawyer.

 

Intellectual property: Key terms, paraphrasing in plain language, case study

This module provides an opportunity to analyse a case and prepare a case brief. There is also a listening exercise regarding copyright and fair use. There is a test at the end of the module to test for understanding.

Negotiable instruments: Promissory note, summarising, providing advice

Learn about key vocabulary, uplifting information, drafting, describing legislation, making suggestions and recommendations.

Secured transactions: Security agreements, requesting and presenting information

Compare and contrast concepts using correct verb structures. Discover the formality of correspondence and how to paraphrase.
